Home Decor For Weddings

You can also make your home wedding feel uniquely yours without depleting your budget. Opt for framed photos as centrepieces, or bring out grandma’s china for place settings or cake displays.

Ceremonies are becoming less common without a backdrop, but you may also want to cover your windows with tulle and garland; use flower-filled arches and canopies to define an aisle; or suspend lanterns from long tables in your yard for added luxury.

Flowers

Home weddings are the perfect place to let flowers take centre stage in your day, but they also have a tendency to blow your budget way out of proportion. That’s why I recommend using blooms only in your bouquet, your reception centrepieces and some key arrangements, and filling up secondary spaces with greenery or fruit branches or whatever other budget boosters you choose to use.

Brides who prefer graphic flowers with vivid, saturated colour palettes are best served by anemones. For flowers that make a bold statement, dahlias are the order of the day (almost literally, as dinner plate dahlias can grow to the size of your head!). Romantics should consider sweet peas or lisianthus, or tulips, which are less costly than peonies.

Here are some great ideas for beautiful and inexpensive table runners – a good sprig of eucalyptus or a branch of olive branches or rose petals will add a dramatic touch to your table without spending anything more on your floral budget. By using inexpensive pieces as your table decorations, you instantly dress up your farmhouse table – and stay within your floral budget!

Canopies

Canopies are supremely versatile props for wedding décor: an Asian-accented fête might be enhanced by a Chinese canopy composed of a single, hanging garland of flowers, while old-world gilt-dipped stemware adds glam, as does a drape of smilax vine – or gilt-dipped birch branches, for that matter. 12.

The canopy can either be used as a backdrop to the cake table or head table for your reception, or as a way to create an enclosed space by framing a dance floor. You can decorate it in true Indian style, depending on the theme of your wedding, using real or artificial flowers, fabrics and ribbons, or even hanging a few decorations from its edge to add a little bit more visual charm.

Wedding canopies demarcate the space of a ceremony and can be a religious marker like the Jewish chuppah, or they can be an elegant focus point at a rustic village wedding or a wild mandap.

Lighting

Lighting is everything to set your wedding atmosphere and create incredible photo opportunities. Soft lighting is flattering for portraits. Dramatic uplighting makes a bold statement about candid photos on the dance floor.

Light lanterns make a pretty accent to wedding décor; they give off a romantic glow that casts a golden hue wherever it goes. Hang lanterns from the sides of walkways to illuminate your guests’ paths to the party or from branches in the sky above for a beautiful garden ambiance; place them on long farm tables during your dinner service as table centrepieces.

In contrast, decorative illuminated letters make a great artistic feature and are a good choice for a gift for anyone moving in with you.

Backyard

If you’re hosting your wedding at home, enlist some home decor help, and create a unique and imaginative installation at the table, using geometric dishes and wood and metal elements to both introduce your couples’ style, and gift your guests something they can bring home with them.

If you have a larger backyard, create divisions between spaces with room dividers covered in fabric, as this couple did; they are also useful stations for bars, escort cards, or even photo booths.

A backyard wedding can be a bit of a meandering affair. Erected direction signs – part of an easy DIY project – help to point out where each part of the celebration is happening. For this, you just need boards, paint and markers – and guests can even pose for pictures in front of, or holding the signs.
